Avoid Career-Limiting Phrases and What to Say Instead
Do you know that the words we utter determine what others perceive about us?
Avoid these words at work if you want your colleagues and managers to take you more seriously so you can appear more confident and authoritative.
The first word to avoid is 'just'.
When you use the word 'just' in a sentence, it can make you sound unsure of yourself and diminish your authority.
For example, saying 'I just wanted to check in on the project' makes it seem like you're hesitant and not fully committed to the project. Instead, try saying 'I wanted to check in on the project' or 'I'm checking in on the project to ensure we're on track.'"
Another common phrase that can undermine your credibility is 'I'm sorry'. While it's important to apologize when you've made a mistake, using 'I'm sorry' too often can make you seem like you lack confidence.
Instead, try saying 'Thank you for bringing that to my attention' or 'I appreciate your patience while we resolve this issue'."
Avoid using the phrase 'I think' when expressing an opinion.
This phrase can make it seem like you're uncertain about your own ideas.
Instead, try saying 'In my opinion' or 'From my experience' to convey more confidence in your perspective.
By avoiding these words and phrases, you'll be able to communicate with more authority and be taken more seriously at work.
Try incorporating these tips into your language and see the difference it makes.
With gratitude,
